As seen in ArchDaily, our client Emrys Architects have simultaneously developed two urban blocks to bridge across this central space – Wells Mells – creating two connected buildings while enriching an underused back street.

Berners & Wells by Emrys Architects has reimagined this semi-enclosed mews space as an opportunity to re-stitch the building into the high street. The building has now created over 7,000 sqm of flexible office & retail space and enhanced the public realm.

The scheme involved the retention of a fine Edwardian façade on Wells Street beside the neighbouring Grade II* listed Sanderson Hotel.

On the Berners Street façade, bronze anodised aluminium is set against petrol teal coloured glazed bricks and Portland stone. The glazed finish of the faience reflects light and provides depth and character. This carefully chosen palette of materials creates a colourful lift and texture to the façade, and echoes the local historic buildings throughout Fitzrovia which are predominantly brick and stone.
