Cosway Street by Bell Phillips has been featured in Dezeen!
Set within Marylebone’s historic Lisson Grove conservation area, the scalloped brick façades distinguish the 49 new homes and have enhanced a degraded streetscape with a modern and contextually appropriate development.
A palette of three soft-toned bricks, crisp stone dressings and contrasting mortar shades splits the building into three, with each distinct section responding to the character of the building across the street. The fluted façade motif echoes the arched windows and circular columns of a nearby listed church, which is repeated at various scales to create a distinctive new building that ripples with visual interest whilst being rooted in its context.
The homes are designed to be open-plan with generous living, dining and kitchen areas flowing around recessed balconies with secondary openings from balconies onto bedrooms.
Bell Phillips exploited the unique additional depth of the elevation to provide super-insulated external walls as part of a wider strategy to reduce operational energy.
Cosway Street forms part of the first phase of the Church Street masterplan for Westminster Council. Bell Phillips’ major development of Church Street sites A, B and C form part of the second phase, comprising over 1,100 new homes.
