Gort Scott are in AJ Specification: Brick & Stone

Gort Scott are in the April 2024 issue of the AJ Specification: Brick & Stone with their Gateway West project as a case study!

Gort Scott’s new four-storey building occupies a prominent corner location, and sits as part of a cluster of buildings that, as their name suggests, mark a key entrance point within White City.

The scheme is part of an ambitious redevelopment programme that is transforming the west London district into a hub for the creative industries, media and technology.

Certified as BREEAM Outstanding, Gateway West is at once modern in its premise, but handcrafted in its delivery. The building’s solidity when viewed from a distance becomes more intriguing on closer inspection, with irregular layered planes and a variety of brick bonds breaking up its surfaces. The underlying concept of the deliberately keep-like building is one of a heavy grounded base rising through a middle wall with punched openings, towards a more open set of brick fins or piers towards its top. Large circular windows are a playful touch, referencing Louis Kahn’s Indian Institute of Management in Ahmadabad, and set within asymmetric gables with other muted flourishes that add to the building’s visual interest.
