At the end of November, our client the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) presented their annual Doolan Award, which saw an incredible range of Scottish projects entered, and saw John McAslan + Partners’ The Burrell Collection in Glasgow by crowned Scotland’s best new building!
The RIAS Andrew Doolan Award is named in memory of its founder and architect/entrepreneur, Andy Doolan, who died in April 2004. This year’s jury was chaired by David Kohn of David Kohn Architects, alongside author and journalist Gabriella Bennett, and RIAS president Karen Anderson – who praised John McAslan + Partners’ sensitive refurbishment of The Burrell Collection as ‘an outstanding example of problem-solving and futureproofing that has rejuvenated an old friend’.
The award was covered across a wide range of outlets, from TV and radio to national newspapers, architecture and design press, and museums and heritage press!
Dezeen did a fantastic series showcasing each of the five shortlisted buildings, which was made up of:

The Architects’ Journal, Architecture Today, Wallpaper* and Urban Realm published fantastic stories explaining the bold yet sensitive response on one of Scotland’s most important museums, originally designed in 1983 by Barry Gasson, John Meunier and Brit Andresen.
Museums + Heritage, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Scotland News and STV News also aired coverage celebrating the civic pride of the heritage project.
